Following the resignation of Pedro Brolo as Guatemala’s Foreign Minister, Mario Búcaro was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in President Alejandro Giammatei’s cabinet.
After taking office on Tuesday morning, Búcaro Flores affirmed that he will watch over the interests of migrants from his country, as well as strengthen ties between Guatemala and the other countries that make up the continent in order to pursue a bilateral agenda.
“In my capacity as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chancellor of the Republic of Guatemala, I appreciate the trust that President Alejandro Giammattei has placed in me to position Guatemala as the epicenter of investment, development, and work in the Americas”.
“I express our firm and clear commitment to meet their needs”, he said, “having as a priority, and by direct order of President Alejandro Giammattei, to make the protection of our citizens abroad the main axis of Guatemalan foreign policy, with a focus on our diaspora in the United States, Mexico, and Canada”.
According to a statement issued by the Presidency’s Ministry of Social Communication, Mario Búcaro Flores is a career diplomat who has served the country as Guatemala’s extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador to Mexico.
In addition to Mexico, he has served as his country’s ambassador to Israel and has been dedicated to the development of peace-building and poverty reduction in Latin America, Georgia, Bulgaria, and Cyprus; he is also a lawyer and notary from the Rafael Landívar University.
