The presence of hole and fire watch personnel in the Code of Federal Regulations is made mandatory by OSHA. The fire watch guards patrol in the areas of the business where actions like welding or cutting with torches or any fire related actions are happening that can pose a danger to the property and people. Events, exhibitions, weddings, shows etc require fire watch guards to make sure the place is fireproof.
Fire watch guards form an important part of construction and industrial maintenance safety programs as their main job is to protect the sensitive spaces from fire by alerting the officials in case of emergency to make sure firefighters reach space on time. By the time firefighters reach the spot the fire watch guards can control the fire but they won’t be putting off the fire. They alert the professionals when the emergency arises.
The fire watch guard is not required and isn’t allowed to perform any duties other than alerting the officials in case fire breaks in the premises they are guarding. The fire guards constantly patrol the sensitive spaces where work related to or with fire is happening. They maintain vigilance on potential fires. Fire watch guards are prepared to operate fire extinguishers, hydrants, fixed monitors, and hose carts whenever required.
In case of emergency they know the facilities to be contacted and the procedure to be followed. They notify the emergency services instantly. They are trained to use the fire-extinguishing equipment present in the premises. When patrolling they keep a log of the complete fire system present in the property inspecting the entire work area looking for potential release of flammable vapors or liquids.
