Streetwear has been around for decades, and there’s a new generation of DIY artists and creatives who are making casual apparel even more desirable. Texas natives and founders of Factory Error, Ashton Smith and Brayden Russell have spent hours in photoshop to create unique graphic designs for this demand in the marketplace.
Factory Error would not exist if Smith and Russell did not recognize each other’s custom pieces at the local skatepark. The two have similar tastes and backgrounds, including family members who played in heavy metal bands like Pantera and Pearl Jam. This, in part, was inspiration for their pieces which consists of distinctive grungy designs, each with their own message.
Smith and Russell launched their line in February hoping to make a wave in the streetwear realm, but also to create and unite a community. The two aspire to keep the origin of t-shirts alive by adhering to those who want to be a part of something more. Despite having a darker style, the company as a whole is all about positive vibes. Their slogan, “We’re All 1/1,” and brand name highlight that Individuality is a priceless possession. Smith and Russell realize people will always look for imperfections in others, and most have a tendency to look askance at those differences and especially at those who are indiscreet at being authentic. Factory Error wants to pave the way for those daring to embrace differences.
The brand remains true to this, even when it comes to sales. They only release limited items, typically under 25 per design. This is to make their customers stand out from the crowd. Factory Error is competing to be a top exclusive brand and will be launching an app this week, which will allow its core fans to have access to early releases or attain a piece previously sold out. Smith and Russell hope this builds a family following with increased personal interactions.
Factory Error has two new t-shirts out right now, both with the 90s and early 2000s twist. This Friday, they will release their collaboration line with NOFACEOUTSIDERS. Preview alert…one design will include a person emerging from an underworld. The message behind this image is for anyone who needs/wants to submerge from whatever is holding them back in life.
Despite being a new company, the brand continues to sell out within a week of each release. Factory Error’s customers may be a niche group, but it’s a group that will carry influence on social media. In a world of fakes, the authentic ones tend to stick out.
